Kandhar

Kandahar is a 2001 Iranian film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, set in Afghanistan during the rule of the Taliban. The film is based on a partly true, partly fictionalized story of a successful Afghan-Canadian who returns to Afghanistan after receiving a letter from her sister, who was left behind when the family escaped. Kandahar was filmed mostly in Iran, including at the Niatak refugee camp, but also secretly in Afghanistan itself. Film presenter: Teresa Cutler-Broyles is a PhD Candidate in American Studies (at UNM) with an emphasis on American Orientalism and Film Studies, and she teaches film for the Cinematic Arts and American Studies departments. Topics include Middle Eastern film, representations of the Middle East in American film, and Cult film.

The Beauty Academy of Kabul

A documentary following American women (some of whom emigrated from Afghanistan in the early 1980s) who return to the capital city of Kabul to open an American-style school for beauticians. Some of their students are women who maintained "underground" beauty salons while the city was under strict Taliban control.
